Indian Railways is not just about tracks and trains; it’s about architectural masterpieces. Some of our stations are so beautiful they have earned UNESCO World Heritage status.
The First Train Journey
English: The history of Indian Railways began on April 16, 1853. The first passenger train steamed off from Bori Bunder (now CSMT, Mumbai) to Thane.
The Engines: It was pulled by three steam locomotives—Sahib, Sindh, and Sultan.
The Distance: It covered 34 km in about 57 minutes, carrying 400 guests in 14 carriages.
The Visionary: Lord Dalhousie is known as the "Father of Indian Railways" for his vision to connect the subcontinent.
1. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai
Style: Victorian Gothic Revival.
Fact: A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most photographed buildings in India.
Architect: Frederick William Stevens.
History: Built in 1887 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It took 10 years to build and was originally named 'Victoria Terminus'.
2. Howrah Junction, West Bengal
Style: Romanesque architecture.
Fact: India’s oldest and busiest railway complex with 23 platforms.
History: The current red-brick building was opened in 1905. However, the first train from Howrah ran in 1854 to Hooghly. It is the largest and oldest railway complex in India.
3. Charbagh Railway Station, Lucknow
Style: Indo-Saracenic.
The foundation stone was laid in 1914 and construction was completed in 1926.
Fact: From the top, the station looks like a chessboard with pieces placed on it!
4. Chennai Central, Tamil Nadu
Style: Gothic and Romanesque.
Fact: Known for its iconic red building and the massive clock tower.
History: Built in 1873, this station is famous for its massive clock tower and Travancore-style architecture.
