1. The Historic Debut (1854)
The First Journey: On August 15, 1854, the first passenger train in Eastern India steamed out of Howrah for Hooghly (a distance of 24 miles).
A Modest Start: Back then, the station was nothing more than a small zinc-roofed shed and a single platform. The demand was so high on the first day that tickets were sold out instantly, and thousands were left disappointed!
2. The Architectural Transformation (1905)
The Designer: As rail traffic grew, the current iconic red-brick building was designed by the famous British architect Halsey Ricardo.
Romanesque Style: The new station building was inaugurated on December 1, 1905. It was built in the Romanesque-Italianate style, featuring massive towers and the iconic grand clocks that still stand today as a symbol of Kolkata.
3. The Junction of Two Empires
Howrah is unique because it serves as the terminal for two major railway zones:
Eastern Railway (ER): Occupying the "Old Complex" (Platforms 1 to 15).
South Eastern Railway (SER): Occupying the "New Complex" (Platforms 17 to 23), which was added in the 1980s to handle the massive increase in long-distance travel to Western and Southern India.
4. Role in the World Wars
During World War II, Howrah Junction played a critical strategic role. It was the primary transit point for British and American troops heading to the Burma front. Legend has it that the station's roof was painted black to protect it from potential Japanese air raids during the night.
5. Incredible Historical Facts
Most Platforms: With 23 platforms, Howrah holds the record for the largest number of platforms in a single railway terminal in India.
The Zero Mile: Historically, all road distances in West Bengal were measured starting from Howrah Station.
A Gateway for Greats: The station has hosted legendary figures like Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, and Mahatma Gandhi. In 1897, a massive crowd gathered here to welcome Swami Vivekananda upon his triumphant return from the Parliament of Religions in Chicago.
Underwater Milestone: In 2024, Howrah made history again by becoming part of India’s first Underwater Metro line, connecting the station to Kolkata's business hub (Esplanade) under the Hooghly River.
